HST46 Combined Shear Force & Bending Moment Apparatus

This compact unit allows the observation and analysis of both Shear Force and Bending Moment within one unit, which is mounted inside the HST1 universal Frame and Stand (sold separately).

A rigid, aluminium beam is cut into two unequal lengths, creating a ‘cut’ section. Each beam is then simply supported on vertical supports. Each support can be moved along the beam section length creating varied support positions. At the ‘cut’ section, a deep groove ball bearing in one beam runs within a block in the other beam. This allows for both vertical movement (shear) and rotation (bending) to occur.

The Shear Force is measured using a vertical load cell. A second underslung load cell measures the bending moment force in the beam ‘cut’ section via it’s moment lever arm set. The output from the load cells is fed into the essential extra HDA200 Interface (sold separately) for displaying of the forces. Load cell connection leads are supplied as standard.

Special load hangers are provided that fit over the beams. The load hangers can be positioned accurately along the beams length by using the graduated scales attached to the side of the beams.

The smooth design of the beam sections allows a wide variety of unrestricted load positions to be used along the beam lengths.

A full set of slotted, calibrated weights is included along with a comprehensive instruction manual for lecturer and student, giving full details on apparatus assembly and operation as well as example results.

The HDA200 Interface is sold separately as an essential extra. The shear force and bending moment force are all captured and displayed using the HDA200 Interface. The force is displayed with its engineering unit of Newton (N).

To compliment the HST46 hardware, the HST46S Experimental Software is available giving the student an opportunity to simulate the experiment, varying a broader range of experiment parameters and to compare actual results with theoretical results when the experiment is run with the software. When the HST46 hardware is purchased with a dedicated HDA200 Interface as an essential extra the experiment software, HST46S, is supplied as standard.
