Steam

Steam power plant for teaching purposes has traditionally been based on industrial equipment adapted for educational use. Whilst enabling experimental work to be undertaken, this approach suffers from a number of disadvantages. These include a large fixed installation requiring extensive site preparation; high capital, running, maintenance and inspection costs and a slow response to a change in operating conditions. The complexity and scale of the system can also confuse student understanding of the basic principles of Rankine cycle steam generators and turbines.

The Steam Generator and Service Module and Steam Turbine Module have been specifically designed for teaching purposes and therefore offer the following advantages over traditional equipment:

• Low capital cost.
• Very low running, maintenance and inspection costs.
• Bench top unit easily installed and moved.
• Very low thermal inertia - steam generation within 2 minutes and test results in 10 minutes.
• Incorporates all the important processes and components of a full size steam power plant.
• Easily understood and safe to operate.
• Unique design eliminates explosion hazard associated with pressure vessels.
• All processes under student control from one location.

S200 Steam Generator and Service Module
A bench top unit which includes a stainless steel gas fired steam generator capable of producing approximately 7.5 kg per hour of wet, saturated or superheated steam at up to 10 bar and 2400C.A throttle valve, condensing unit with air ejector, closed feed water system and safety cut out controls complete the cycle.

The design is safety approved and certified by an internationally recognised engineering assessor. Each unit is individually tested and supplied with a boiler test certificate. Instrumentation is fitted to allow the measurement of all important quantities including air/fuel ratio, generator efficiency, steam properties, combustion products and an energy balance across each main component.

S200

The unit is supplied complete with a double walled aluminium flue and provides a supply of steam, condensate handling and air extraction facilities for other units including the Steam Turbine Module. A re-circulating Pumped Water System is available for laboratories where the existing water supply may not be sufficient to operate the air ejector system.

S210

S210 Steam Turbine Module
A bench top steam turbine module incorporating a single stage axial flow impulse steam turbine with water cooled friction brake, integral condenser and condensate measurement. The turbine operates at up to 40,000 rpm and develops over 100W of shaft power when operating with the Steam Generator and Service Module or any suitable alternatively available source of steam. Instrumentation includes all relevant pressures, temperatures, torque, speed and steam consumption. Together with the Steam Generator and Service Module the unit allows investigation of all the aspects of a Rankine cycle steam power plant.
